Social and Moral Development

Today, we will be continuing  in chapter 14 on Social and Moral Development.   We will be doing a jigsaw activity for this.  For more information click the following link:

Getting Your Lessons Started

Often people say that the toughest part of teaching a lesson is getting it started...

  1. How will I get the students's full attention?
  2. What can I do to pique their interested?
  3. How can I be sure that they'll want to learn this at all???
There is no one sure fire answer.  That is because there are too many variables like topic content, teaching style, student background knowledge, and available resources.

Possibly, the best way to go is to find what engages you as a teacher.  If you are excited about the activity or lesson, then you are more likely to get your students excited and engaged.  You want to be the contagious element when it comes to gaining their attention and interest in the lesson.

Aside from your attitude about the lesson, there are a number of things you can actually "DO" to start a lesson....  read a story, show a video, pose a question, do a k-w-l, etc..

Early Work  - Perhaps here is a great place to introduce what is known as the "Anticipatory Set" aspect of a lesson plan.  To begin understanding what an anticipatory set is, you can further your reading here.    Also, to view many examples of an anticipatory set click here.

What anticipatory sets are you thinking of using in your lessons?  Maybe you have already used one and didn't even know it.

  • conception
  • Fallopian tube
  • uterus
