Affecting Baby's Development

There are many things that we as parents can do to help our child develop and reach their milestones.  It is all about our interactions with them and what we do for our child.  For your early work today, name at least five things we can do for our children that will help them develop properly.  If needed, you can refer to your book.  Be prepared to discuss your answers.

Today we'll be finishing up the menu plans for a pregnant women.  The plan template is here if you need it.

Remember, you can work with your group on this.  Have one person share their document with everyone in the group so that all can participate in adding information.  Make sure you put all of your names at the top.  When finished, share the final document with me.

Diet and Nutrition During Pregnancy

A growing baby gets it's nourishment from the mother's bloodstream.  The mother must eat enough of the right foods to meet her nutritional needs and the baby's needs.  It is especially important because some nutrients such as folic acid can prevent certain birth defects.  To make sure a mother to be is eating right, the following is recommended:

  • Eat a variety from all food groups
  • "Eat the rainbow"
  • Increase calories by 300 extra calories per day
  • Keep sodium low
  • Keep fried or fatty foods to a minimum
For today's activity, we will create a sample menu for a pregnant mother.  We will use page 270 as a resource for number of servings needed.  Typically, a serving is a half of a cup, one slice (bread or cheese), and/or 3 ounces (meat)

You will use this template to create your menu.  Make a copy of it before you begin.

Play time

Are you familiar with charades?  You know - the game where you act something out but say nothing and everyone has to guess what you are.  Well, today we are going to give that a twist.  Today, we are going to play charay-dough.  It's charades, but you are going to use playdough.


With your group, take turns creating something from your playdough. Say nothing as your groups members try to guess what you are making.  Whoever guesses correctly gets to take the next turn and make something with the playdough.

Have fun, and remember, no talking by the creator.
