Becoming a Teacher

As with any professional career, there are unique words and phrases used on the job.  The teaching field is no different.  You will likely hear and use the following terms beginning in college and then beyond.

  • grant
  • job shadowing
  • service-learning
  • prerequisite course
  • proficiency test
  • student teaching
  • cooperating teacher
  • certified teacher
  • reciprocal agreements
  • teaching license
  • personal portfolio
  • artifacts
Your turn:  Discuss with a partner what you think each of these terms mean.  After you discuss all of them, choose one word and write it on the board.  Then, write your definition of the word next to it.  Do not pick the same word as your partner or anyone else in the room.
